Windchimes, also known as Aeolian chimes, are hollow tubes that are either made of solid metal or wood. You would often see them hanging from outside a building or home. They are known for making beautiful sounds whenever the wind hits the chimes and the hollow tubes strike against each other when they hit against a metal, wooden or rubber ball in the center of the chimes.
The sounds that they produce are inharmonic instead of harmonic. However, if you hang them at about a fifth of their length, the sounds become more harmonic. Windchimes that are high quality are usually hung in such a way that the ball in the middle strikes in the center along the length of the chimes. The thickness, length, width and material of the chimes determine the frequency of the sounds they make. The makers follow a formula for determining how long each tube should be in order to produce specific notes.
