wind chimes @ Seattle Center

Caught this public art exhibition one sunny day in July. It was so gorgeous and peaceful. Below are the details. ———————————————————————— Windfall by Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo June 15 to September 15, 2010 Theater Commons at Seattle Center 2nd Avenue North between Mercer Street and August Wilson Way The delicate sound of more than 1000 small, cast-iron wind chimes will fill the new Theater Commons at Seattle Center. Theater Commons is a new, sustainably landscaped campus entry to Seattle Center with a tree-lined pedestrian corridor and terraced seating created in collaboration with the Seattle Repertory Theatre and Intiman Theatre. Windfall invites visitors to slow down and explore the open space and adjacent Donnelly Gardens, which, like the artwork, honor the contributions of late civic arts leader Peter Donnelly. Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo have been working collaboratively as Lead Pencil Studio since 2002. Han and Mihalyo create interdisciplinary works that explore architecture, scale and social aspects of the man-made environment. They have completed large-scale temporary projects such as Mary Hill Double (Columbia River Gorge, 2006) and Exit Ramp (Moore Theater, Inside/Out, 2009). Permanent public artworks include a just-completed project at Bellevue Community College and an in-progress work at the US/Canadian Border crossing in Blaine, WA. Commissioned with Seattle Center 1% for Art funds and administered by the

Copper Wind Chimes

I made this wind chime for my mom for Christmas ’09. I used 1″ diameter copper pipe cut into varying lengths from 16″ to 23″. The top part is covered with 3/4″ square copper shingles cut out of a copper sheet using tin snips and then held in place with copper nails. Then the whole thing was aged using a salt/vinegar solution. I got the designs on the pipes by taping them off in different patterns, aging the exposed areas, and then removing the tape.
